Who are they?
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Washtenaw County is a non-profit organization that aims to improve the lives of people affected by mental illness. Those stricken by these biological disorders, their families and friends, mental health professionals, and the broader community can all benefit from the organization’s mission: to offer support, education and advocacy for members of the Washtenaw County community.
What do they do?
NAMI provides a variety of mental health services:
- Support groups for those suffering with mental illness and the friends and family that support them;
- Free monthly program meetings to educate the community on a variety of mental health issues;
- Family Education, Support and Training (FEST) is a unique collaboration; our NAMI affiliate partners with the University of Michigan and Community Support and Treatment Services, the local community mental health agency, to offer a family education course.
- Crisis Intervention Training for the Ann Arbor Police Department.
Why do they offer these services?
NAMI provides services for a broad range of individuals. They offer services for people personally suffering with mental illness, as well as the friends and family that support them and the community as a whole. NAMI also offers training services for law enforcement to help officers recognize possible mental illness and deal compassionately with this vulnerable segment of the community, getting them to the appropriate treatment.
NAMI WC offers a support group for both family and friends of persons with mental illness, a group for individuals who have a mental illness as well as a group for people with borderline personality disorder and/or depression. They also have a group for parents of children and adolescents who have a mental illness. Their biannual family education, support, and training course – sometimes referred to as Mental Health 101 – offers family members of those suffering from mental illness information about brain disorders, tools to deal effectively with mental illness, and a supportive environment in which to learn and grow.
