LGBT Health Awareness Week

This week is LGBT Health Awareness Week at the University of Michigan Medical School.  Here are the events that have been planned.  We hope you’ll be able to attend sometime during the week!

Ally Training
Date/Time: Monday, March 14th, 2-5 pm
Location:
Medical School, Medical Science Building II, Room 2817
Interactive training led by Will Sherry from the Spectrum Center, focusing on how to provide effective support to LGBT individuals. Special attention will be given to what it means to be an ally as a health care professional.

Race, Stigma and HIV Risk Among Young African American MSM
Date/Time:
Wednesday, March 16, 12-1 pm
Location: Medical School, Medical Science Building II, West or South Lecture Hall (depending on availability)
Why do African American MSM report lower rates of risky sexual behavior yet have a higher risk of becoming HIV+?  Robin Miller, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, Michigan State University, and Angelique Outlaw, Ph.D., Department of Pediatrics, Wayne State University School of Medicine, will explore the contextual factors that affect risk in individuals and groups. This event is co-sponsored by the Black Medical Association and BGLAM.

A Guide to Building an LGBT Friendly Practice
Date/Time: Thursday, March 17, 12-1 pm
Location: Medical School, Medical Science Building II, West Lecture Hall
Charisse Gencyuz, M.D. will discuss what health professionals can do to make their practice more welcoming and inclusive of LGBT patients.

Caring for Transgender Patients
Date/Time:
Friday, March 18, 12-1 pm
Location: Medical School, Medical Science Building II, West Lecture Hall
Antonia Caretto, Ph.D., a Psychologist in Farmington Hills Michigan, will discuss various aspects of caring for transgender individuals. She has 25 years of clinical and research experience working with children, adolescents, and adults with gender variant identities.
