5W Wednesday: The Corner Health Center

Our 5W Wednesday series highlights a variety of health care organizations, professionals and programs that keep our community healthy.

What is the Corner Health Center?
The Corner Health Center is Michigan’s first, largest and most comprehensive teen health center. They educate youth on the long-range implications of their health behaviors, encourage them to develop responsible behaviors, and take responsibility for their own health.

The Corner Health Center’s goals for teens are to:

  • increase their access to health care
  • reduce risk taking
  • understand the long-range implications of their health behaviors
  • encourage and develop participation in and responsibility for their own health and well-being

The Corner provides medical services and mental health services, as well as integrating support and education into the services provided. The Corner Health Center also has a theatre troupe, a peer education project for local teenagers that promotes discussion on sensitive topics, models positive behaviors and coping skills, and provides practice using effective communication and resistance skills.

Why have a health center specifically devoted to serve teens?
The Corner Health Center is designed to support youth and help them to stay healthy and make responsible decisions. They provide a confidential and youth friendly environment. Clinicians include doctors and nurse practitioners who specialize in the care of teens.

Many teens come to The Corner to seek information, support a friend or receive care for a health problem such as asthma or a sore throat. Some also come for reproductive health services. Parents are welcome to accompany their child to medical visits.

The Corner encourages all patients to discuss their visit with their parents. Most report that they tell their mother and/or father about coming to the health center. Unfortunately, not all teens are able to tell their parent or guardian that they are sexually active. Some children fear the consequences including abuse. They state that, if their privacy is not guaranteed, they may not seek care. These young people still have a right to services that can help them stay healthy. Because of this, the law requires that all minors have access to confidential birth control services, pregnancy tests, prenatal and postpartum care, mental health and substance abuse services.

Who can use the Corner Health Center services and what is the cost?
The following services are provided to youth ages 12 through 21 and their children:

  • wellness care including physicals and immunizations
  • diagnosis and treatment of common health problems such as a sore throat, infections, or asthma
  • reproductive health care including birth control, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STI), HIV testing and counseling, pregnancy tests and prenatal care
  • pediatric care for children of adolescents
  • mental health services
  • support and education programs including WIC (Women, Infant and Children) Nutrition Program and MIHP (Maternal, Infant Health Program), Theatre Troupe, Youth Aging-Out, and MOM Power!

See Information for Young Adults and Teens for information on getting started/your visit, privacy and safety, paying for your visit, and more. To learn more about who uses the Corner Health Center, read the Meet Our Clients section of the website.

The Corner Health Center accepts most insurance. They help uninsured patients apply for insurance, and most plans are free.
If a patient doesn’t have insurance and doesn’t want to apply, the Corner Health Center charges a fee based on the type of visit and his/her income. Office visits for new patients are usually $5 to $25 and for ongoing patients $3 to $17. A pregnancy test is $2 plus the cost of the visit. If the patient can’t afford to pay, the Corner helps him/her set up a payment plan.

Where is the Corner Health Center located?
The Corner Health Center is located in downtown Ypsilanti, just two blocks from the bus station.

When is the Corner Health Center open?
The Corner Health Center’s office hours are 9am-6pm Monday through Thursday and 9am-5pm on Fridays. Appointment hours are 9:30am-5pm Monday through Thursday and 9:30am-4pm on Fridays.

Interested in donating to the Corner Health Center?
Last year, the Corner served 1,600 patients, providing 6,800 services. No adolescent or their child is turned away due to inability to pay for services. The biggest challenge the Corner Health Center faces is to ensure access to low-cost, high quality health care to all young people despite the ever-rising cost of health care.
