The Kids’ FUNfari at the Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek, Michigan was very well-attended and a great success!
The healthy and active-themed event kicked off Saturday morning with the Lemur Lap Fun Run, in which kids of all ages participated in a race around the zoo, lead by the costumed Leroy the Lemur! Parents and zoo-goers cheered the kids on during their run. Interactive presentations were scheduled throughout the day at the Smith Wildlife Discovery Theater. A few notable active presentations included “Lemurcize with Leroy the Lemur,” during which Leroy led kids through a series of warm-up streches, aerobic exercises, and a cool-down routine (see photo below), “Jungle Jump” with Nature Nicole, and a Yoga Presentation by the Laughing Otter Daycare & Family Enrichment Center. There were also presentations about outdoor camping safety and “Goin’ Bananas” Animal Play Day Presentations a different animal exhibits throughout the day.

Children learned how to find age-appropriate health information with our “Fishing for Health Information” game. We were joined at this event by many other vendors including the Kingman Museum, with a game teaching kids how to sort foods into categories of grains, fruit/vegetable, dairy, protein, and fats/sugars, and the Kalamazoo Nature Center, who brought grasshoppers and challenged kids to see how fast they could flap their “wings” in 30 seconds. Other vendors included: the Child Development Center, Meijer, YMCA Family Center of Battle Creek, Sherman Lake YMCA Outdoor Camp Knappen, Boys & Girls Club of Battle Creek, Kids ‘n’ Stuff Museum, Battle Creek Community Foundation, Leila Arboretum Children’s Garden, Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan, Laughing Otter Day Care and Family Enrichment Center, Calhoun County Challenge, Music Center of Battle Creek, Calhoun County Office of the Sheriff, Food Bank of South Central Michigan, First Tee of Battle Creek, Red Cross Clown Troupe, Integrated Health Partners, Branch Gymnastics, Springfield Farmers’ Market, and the Southwest Michigan Council Boy Scouts of American.
