5W Wednesday: Affirmations Transgender Health Fair

Our 5W Wednesday series highlights a variety of health care organizations, professionals and programs that keep our community healthy.

What is Affirmations?
Affirmations is a non-profit community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their allies. They are housed in a beautiful state-of-the-art, multi-use facility in the heart of downtown Ferndale, at the Northern border of the City of Detroit. It is not only the largest LGBT center in Michigan, but one of the ten largest in the country.

Programs include a nationally renowned Youth Services programHealth Services programdiscussion and support groups, and social and recreational activities.  Resources at the center include our toll-free Helpline, the Pittmann-Puckett Art GalleryGame RoomGeneral Motors Foundation Media Center and Bayard Rustin Library, and our Volunteer and Leadership Development program.

Why are they having a transgender health fair?
The transgender health fair will feature information from various community organizations, guest speakers, food and give-aways.  There will also be an informational session on the process to become eligable for hormone therapy.

Who is welcome at the event?
All are welcome to stop by this free event!

When is the transgender health fair?
The transgender health fair will be held this Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 1pm – 4pm.
