Rest in Peace: The Washtenaw Way of Death

The Museum on Main’s new exhibit seeks to educate visitors about past mourning rituals, costumes and artifacts.  Visitors will also learn about the importance of embalming and the history of funeral businesses in Washtenaw County. There are artifacts, mourning dresses, photographs, a private mausoleum and a unique cemetery with a digital pathway filled with meaningful symbolism. The rituals and customs surrounding death can play a major role in disease prevention and often heavily influence health beliefs, thus this exhibit could be a great way to learn more about how beliefs, taboos, and myths surrounding death have changed over time.

This exhibit will run from October 13, 2012 to February 17, 2013 every Saturday and Sunday from 12-4PM at 500 N. Main St in Ann Arbor.Visit here to learn more.
